COVER ROCK FEST CONFIRMS ORIGINAL MEMBER OF THE DEAD

AVON — Cover Rock Festival on Thursday confirmed that former Grateful Dead member and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tom Constanten would perform with Colorado's own Shakedown Street, along with Dave Herbert, lead guitar and vocals in JGB, in celebration of Shakedown Street's 30th anniversary. The festival takes place June 25 and 26 at the Avon Performance Pavilion at Harry A. Nottingham Park in Avon.

The pairing of this legend with the Dead tribute band seems kismet in creating one psychedelic "Summer of Love" weekend. Constanten joined the Grateful Dead tour back in November 1968 as advisor and keyboardist until early 1970, when he amicably departed from the band feeling he was under-amplified.

He didn't know it then, but in doing so, he expertly avoided the curse of the Dead keyboard set and, instead, went on to appear on upwards of 40 albums and was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Adding to his impressive involvement in music history, Constanten also performed with the Dead to more than half a million people at the 1969 Woodstock Art & Music Festival.

Formed in 1987, The Original Shakedown Street is one of the longest-running Grateful Dead tribute bands in the world and embodies the Dead's spirit of improvisation and discovery while maintaining an intimacy and open harmony with its audience. The band has shared the stage with Los Lobos' David Hidalgo, Jerry Jeff Walker and Melvin Seals of the Jerry Garcia Band.

Two-day general admission and VIP tickets are available on the festival website, coverrockfestival.com. All festivalgoers will also have access to four food trucks, "The Wandering Mad Man" human karaoke machine, outdoor games, a kids' lunar landing zone to entertain little ones at the festival and special photo booth opportunities with Volkswagen buses to commemorate their experience at the festival.

The 21-and-older VIP passes include twice-a-day happy hour, free beer and appetizers, a backstage deck with views of the Vail Valley and Beaver Creek Mountain, keepsake VIP backstage stickers, special kim cut guitar pick laminate and shaded retreat with firepits and seating.

Cover Rock will also be hosting a free poster art exhibit, featuring artists from around North America. The exhibition will run throughout the duration of the festival and is free to attendees. Learn more on the festival website, or follow Cover Rock Festival on Facebook or Twitter.

FORT COLLINS BREWERY RELEASES MAIBOCK FOR LAST TIME

FORT COLLINS — On April 28, Fort Collins Brewery (FCB) brought back its Maibock for a final farewell. Looking back on a decorated career, fans may remember the gold medal win at the 2013 BTI World Beer Championships as well as the malty spring 2015 brew that was aged over the winter. FCB reserved a small amount of this 2015 batch for cellaring. After aging for a year, this German-style brew resurfaces again, just in time for bock weather. But all good things must come to an end and 2016 will mark the 12th year releasing this vintage brew, one last time.

At a robust 6.4 percent ABV, Maibock has extreme clarity with an amber to light garnet color and tan head. Munich malts impart a smooth and sweet finish with playful toffee notes that round out the beer. But what other detections will one find after Maibock has been cellared in the dark and wrapped like a mummy for a year? Upon tasting the 2016 vintage, Tina Peters, FCB owner and general manager explains that, "this beer has aged extremely well as the flavors have grown richer and further melded together. The hop bitterness has faded but instead you'll notice a hint of pepper and a sweet, caramel complexity."

The farewell tour began on April 28 with the final Maibock batch available in 22-ounce bombers in Colorado as well as with a few select distributors, while supplies last. For more information about Maibock, call (970) 472-1499.
