Julian Opie’s, Faime Walking, 2016 is a double sided LED monolith. Opie uses his reductive visual language to show a man walking to nowhere. While he uses technology to create his canvases, Opie’s influences include everything from comics to 18th century portraiture to Japanese woodblock prints. The most well known of the monolith series are installed in an urban setting in London. The installation of the work in a natural setting changes the context. Instead of a figure walking through a bustling city square, he is going nowhere in a beautiful, lush setting. Maybe this is the place to be stuck.
